News: New Version of Microsoft Xbox Console in Circulation
Posted by: Jas Batra on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 - 12:15 AM PST
Computer News Newbury Park, CA - Sometime in March, Microsoft's Xbox manufacturing plants began to deploy a newer revision of the Microsoft Xbox motherboard...

The newest motherboard, discovered within the past week, has made a number of changes from previous revisions, according to popular Xbox modification sites.

Most noticeably is the lack of the well identifiable BIOS chip and the video chip. In the past, Microsoft has used off the shelf components, with readily available data sheets. However, two new chips have been found, while a number of common chips are missing.

These new chips, labeled 'Xyclops' and 'Xcalibur' have the Xbox logo imprinted on them.

"These must be relabeled off the shelf components" are what most sites are in agreement with. However, knowing what these are, and how to boot a secondary BIOS are proving to be a "fun" challenge for most.

Microsoft has been well aware of Xbox console modifications for quite some time. However, they never appeared to take an offensive action. This new motherboard, although it may appear to have been a move against hacking, is possibly just a cost saving effort. Since the debut of the Xbox console in 2001, there have been 5 newer revisions. This latest, the 6th design, is radically different. But each revision has been a move to save money, as the Xbox console costs more to produce than what it is sold for.
