We tried this solution on a Windows 2003 Server partition which was moved from one machine with a SCSI disk to another with a SATA disk. It didn't work with the settings under the CriticalDeviceDatabase key specified in the original post. To solve this we temporarily installed a second copy of Windows 2003 Server on the target machine, on a separate partition. Since we installed this on the target machine, we figured Windows would detect the appropriate settings. So we booted this temporary Windows installation, opened RegEdit and exported the CriticalDeviceDatabase subtree to a .reg file. We then performed the same search & replace operation suggested here in that file, loaded the target's registry hive as suggested and imported it as well as the one given in the original post here. It worked like a charm.. short of having to reactivate Windows on the next boot because of a "major hardware change". Thanks for a superb solution to a very confusing problem.

THANK YOU so very much, both Jas Batra and especially jamiefaye. Without your input this wouldn't of worked for me.

I couldn't find this info anywhere else! I hope Google will rank this higher, it will most certainly help alot more people. 7 years later and it helped me keep an old windows 2000 installation after the motherboard died & was replaced.

For anywone else having this problem, I can add a hint:

You can use Hiren's Boot CD 10 (the Boot to mini XP option) instead of taking the HDD into another computer! The mini XP mode also supports USB memory sticks so you can load the .reg file from there.

Good luck to everyone and thanks again to the OP.

I'm happy now
