Starring: Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix...
Written, Directed, and Produced by: M. Night Shyamalan
From the writer and director of 'The Sixth Sense,' and 'Unbreakable.' Manoj Shyamalan brings us another suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the end.
Graham Hess (MEL GIBSON) lives on a farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with his two children, Morgan and Bo (RORY CULKIN, ABIGAIL BRESLIN), and his younger brother, Merrill (JOAQUIN PHOENIX). But, something unexplainable is happening...
Mr. Hess discovers a crop circle, and all goes to hell. His son believes that extra terrestrials are coming to invade, while his daughter, about 4 years old, begins to complain about the water.
This movie flows smoothly, from one scene to the next, while keeping a coherent plot. Nothing in the movie is there just to be there, as the style of Shyamalan has shown. Numerous jokes keep the tension high enough, without going overboard, causing the audience to jump in their seats almost every other moment. However, unlike his past films, Shyamalan brings us the plot straightaway, but keeps us guessing as to what's going to happen to the family.
Gibson's portrayal of an ex-reverend that lost his wife, living on a farm in a small town, and now has to deal with the insanity related to these crop circles is quite well done. His calm demeanor in times of tension heightens his believability. And the young Ms. Breslin's innocence complements Gibson. Rory Culkin, brother of Macaulay, adds to the tension through his semi-psychotic behavior. Joaquin Phoenix, of 'Gladiator' fame, plays the younger, 'cooler' brother with his sharp wit, and seemingly funny conduct that we associate with today's teens.
Overall, the film was shot with exceptional care, feeding us just that little bit of information that we needed to try to speculate what would happen, but have that all turned around with the next bit of information. Manoj Shyamalan has provided us with another great movie that will have you at the edge of your seat.
