Los Angeles, CA - A user by the name of muslix64 on the popular Doom9 forums released source code for an application that can decrypt HD-DVD movies, possibly a major blow to the movie industry...
The file download, which comes complete with instructions, source code, and a compiled java application, only requires a unique decryption key per title. Using this key, the software decrypts the movie to a location specified by the user. Obtaining this unique "Title Key" appears to be a major hurdle, according to Doom9 forum replies, as muslix64 has not released details on how to obtain this, other than some video snippets and a FAQ (frequently asked questions) of where it might be.
According to the timeline of events posted by muslix64, he/she received their HD-DVD drive on December 6th, and were taken aback when they could not watch their video on their high definition monitor due to the lack of HDCP support on their video card's DVI output. They were forced to revert to VGA (analog) to watch the movie - thereby defeating the true digital nature of HD-DVD movies.
Within a week, muslix64 was able to fully decrypt the HD-DVD protected movie.
On December 21st, 2006, muslix64 was able to find the "Volume Unique Key" and will be releasing a new version of his HD-DVD backup software sometime in January 2007.
