News: United Airlines First to Offer Wireless Internet In-flight
Posted by: MCW Team on Wednesday, June 08, 2005 - 01:27 AM PST
Technology News Chicago, IL - Earlier this week United Airlines received FAA approval to offer wireless internet services in-flight...

Verizon Airfone, a subsidiary of Verizon Communications, partnered with United Airlines and they were able to successfully demonstrate to the FAA that using 802.11b or 802.11g devices would not interfere with aircraft operations.

This comes as a surprise to many that have always heard that electronics interfere, and to leave phones off during flight.

"Our research shows that connecting to the Internet is customers' most preferred form of communication to the ground, and this certification is a crucial step to bring this in-flight wireless access to our customers," said Dennis Cary, United's senior vice president-Marketing. "We are thrilled by this accomplishment and proud to lead the industry in North America with Verizon Airfone in this endeavor."

Both companies have worked together for over a year in order to make wireless access available in-cabin, and at this time, it is only certified in the United B757-200 aircraft.

While still unavailable, the technology is now proven to work. An availability date will be determined once the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) completes its "Air-to-Ground" spectrum auction. This will then determine what service provider and frequency ranges will be used to provide service aboard airliners.

"Our wireless broadband system will require only the addition of an avionics box, a wireless access point and a directional antenna, making it the faster and more affordable choice for United and its passengers," said Bill Pallone, president, Verizon Airfone.
