News: ASUS Announces World's First SideShow Notebook
Posted by: Jas Batra on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 01:47 AM PST
Computer News Los Angeles, CA - One of the world's top 3 notebook PC makers, ASUS, Inc., announced yesterday that they will be releasing the first notebook PC to feature the new SideShow auxiliary display supported by Microsoft's new Vista operating system...

Microsoft's Vista Operating System has a number of features that can't be taken advantage of due to the lack of hardware, including SideShow. SideShow allows access to a number of operating system features and data, without having to boot up the entire operating system. With SideShow, a user can access e-mails, contact information, calendar information, and even some multimedia such as pictures, music, games, and more.

The new ASUS W5Fe notebook PC features a credit card-sized full color mini-display built in to the outer casing, giving the owner full access to the Vista SideShow feature.

As far as specifications go, this laptop is based on the Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology platform; featuring an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, the Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset, and the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Card. Other features include support for DDR2 667MHz RAM, a 12.1" WXGA (1280X768) display panel, SATA hard drive support, a multi-drive (DVD and CD burning), a built-in 1.3 mega pixel rotating web cam, 3x USB 2.0 ports, 1 IEEE 1394 (fire wire) port, VGA and TV Out, headphone and microphone jacks, integrated LAN and MODEM, an all-in-one memory card reader, and of course, the 2.8" QVGA (320x240) SideShow display with controls. An optional Bluetooth v2.0 module is also available for the laptop.

ASUS, Compal, and Quanta produce most of the world's laptops, including those from well-known tier 1 brands. ASUS backs their brand with a 2-year limited warranty, and a 1-year warranty on the battery pack.

With an MSRP of $2199, which includes an Intel T7200 Mobile Processor (2.0GHz, 667MHz FSB, and 4MB L2 Cache), Microsoft Windows Vista Business Edition, 1.5GB RAM (512MB and 1024MB DDR2 667), 160GB SATA Hard Drive, and the optional Bluetooth module, the laptop will make an excellent traveling companion.
