Oxnard, CA - Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Server 2003 has a major incompatibility issue with Intel Corp.'s latest server chipset, the i7501, which prevents it from installing...
This error, discovered as we tried to install Windows Server 2003 on an Intel server, was then confirmed by communication with both Intel and Microsoft, and has been known for quite some time.
We were not given a reason as to the incompatibility, as the i7501 hardware was available for testing purposes during the later Windows Server 2003 pre-release phase. Speaking to Microsoft, we were told to make sure we were using the latest BIOS, disable USB support, and then reinstall - their standard "fix" for most install problems.
However, the Intel technician we spoke of knew what we were going to say as soon as we mentioned "2003." We were told the only current workaround is to install Windows 2000 Server, install the Intel INF chipset software, and then UPGRADE to Windows Server 2003.
The method prescribed by Intel does work, but it remains to be a workaround which consumes quite a bit of time, and may not be possible. For example, a system builder would be unable to complete this process as the OEM media does not upgrade previous versions.
At this time, we are awaiting a response from Microsoft's technical support. When we receive more information, or a true fix, we will post notice ASAP.
