Before the police could arrive at his home, a man aged 45 shot himself dead in the southwestern city of Toulouse. No other information about the incident was made available.
Police seized equipment and documents at the homes of suspects after arresting them on Wednesday.
The operation, involving 100 police officers, is part of a probe begun last April by a judge in the Mediterranean port of Toulon into the distribution of pedophiliac pictures in France.
The probe began after the arrest of a man who owned several hundred photographs showing minors in pornographic poses. It uncovered a network of people exchanging similar files through Internet forums, including one code-named "Star Wars."
